The Friends of Alfie Martin was founded in 2002 to improve the provision for transportation of critically ill babies throughout the Yorkshire area.

The first purchase was a Globetrotter costing £55,000, which is a mobile intensive care Incubator which clicks into any of the WYMAS ambulances in the Yorkshire area.

Over the last 12 years a very special and informed relationship has developed between the Leeds General Infirmary and Alfie’s charity resulting in the purchase and donation of a huge amount of state of the art neonatal intensive care equipment.

Through the hard work of our committee past and present, and the generosity of so many kind people, The Friends of Alfie Martin has become the largest single donor to neonatal intensive care across the Yorkshire region.

The charity currently gives more money each year to the Leeds General Infirmary - to purchase neonatal intensive care equipment than they receive from the NHS. We predominately support the Leeds General Infirmary, as they receive the sickest babies from across the region - approximately 1,700 patients each year - requiring the latest equipment to care for them.

The charity is run entirely by volunteers, a small team of 11 enthusiastic working mothers, with no overheads which means every penny raised is spent where it is so desperately needed. The committee prides itself on, wherever possible, negotiating purchases directly with the equipment manufacturers to secure the best cost price and in some cases saving thousands of pounds.
